Stephen King’s Crouch End Gets Limited Series on Prime Video

Prime Video has greenlit a six-episode limited series adaptation of Crouch End, Stephen King’s 1980 short story. The project marks a notable milestone for screen translations of the author’s work, as it will be the very first King television adaptation to be produced directly in the United Kingdom.

Writer Paul Tomalin, known for his work on Bodies, is adapting the story for television, with Tom Shankland (The Serpent, Berlin Noir) attached to direct. Production is being handled by U.K. outfit Mammoth Screen alongside Fifth Season. Tomalin and Shankland will also serve as executive producers alongside Damien Timmer, Rebecca Keane, and Ben Irving.

From North London to cosmic horror

Originally published in 1980 and later collected in Nightmares & Dreamscapes, Crouch End is one of King’s most explicit homage pieces to H.P. Lovecraft’s Cthulhu Mythos. Set in the quiet, real-life suburban neighbourhood of Crouch End in North London, the prose explores the eerie notion that thin spots exist in the fabric of reality, allowing cosmic monstrosities to bleed into our world.

The upcoming television adaptation centres on global movie star Doris Freeman, who enters a London police station in distress after her husband vanishes under incomprehensible circumstances. Police inspector Ted Vetter is tasked with uncovering the truth, attempting to discern whether Doris is suffering a mental break, hiding a murder, or if genuine otherworldly forces are responsible for her husband’s disappearance.

Nicole Clemens, Vice President of International Originals at Prime Video and Amazon MGM Studios, highlighted the approach behind the project in an official statement:

“Stephen King is one of the defining storytellers of our time, and we’re thrilled to bring his Lovecraftian tale to life in London with Crouch End. Paul Tomalin brings a singular, character-driven vision to the series and, paired with Tom Shankland at the helm, plus the first-class production teams at Mammoth Screen and Fifth Season, this show will grip audiences worldwide with its visceral crime thriller and supernatural mystery.”

Adapting King’s shorter fiction

While King is famously celebrated for his sprawling epics, his short fiction often contains some of his most tightly wound horror concepts. Expanding a short story into a six-part television narrative inevitably requires significant expansion, but Tomalin’s background in crime thrillers suggests the show will lean heavily into procedural intrigue alongside its Lovecraftian elements.

If you have followed the long history of Stephen King screen adaptations, you will know this is actually not the first time Crouch End has made its way to the screen. TNT previously adapted the story in 2006 for its Nightmares & Dreamscapes anthology series. Fans of the material may also recall the celebrated audio performance by Tim Curry, whose narration brought a distinctly creepy atmosphere to King’s U.K.-set nightmare.

This project joins a busy slate of King properties currently in development for television, including Prime Video’s series adaptation of Carrie. Casting for Crouch End is currently underway, and no official release date or broadcast window has been confirmed by Prime Video yet.
