HBO’s Harry Potter reboot hasn’t even reached screens yet, but the Wizarding World may already be expanding. New details point to plans for additional “Harry Potter-branded” series beyond the core adaptation, suggesting the network is thinking far past 2027.
The television remake is set to debut in 2027 with a brand-new cast and a long-term roadmap that could stretch up to a decade. Each of J.K. Rowling’s seven books is currently expected to anchor its own season, with later installments potentially spanning multiple seasons.
A Decade of Wizarding World TV
Warner Bros. Discovery executives have indicated that HBO is planning 10 years of Harry Potter-branded series beginning in 2027. That phrasing matters. It leaves room for projects that go beyond direct adaptations of the novels and into original stories set within the Wizarding World.
The strategy mirrors HBO’s expansion of Westeros, where Game of Thrones evolved into a multi-series franchise. The breakout performance of House of the Dragon and A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms has already proven that fantasy worlds built from beloved books can sustain multiple interconnected shows.
For Harry Potter, that opens the door to long-discussed ideas: a Marauders-era prequel following James and Lily Potter at Hogwarts, or a sequel exploring the next generation glimpsed in the epilogue of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows. None of these projects are officially detailed, but the framework for expansion appears to be in place.
The Reboot Casts a Wide Net
The main series remains the foundation. Dominic McLaughlin will play Harry, with Alastair Stout as Ron Weasley and Arabella Stanton as Hermione Granger. The adult cast includes John Lithgow as Dumbledore, Janet McTeer as McGonagall, Paapa Essiedu as Snape, and Nick Frost as Hagrid.
Season one adapts Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone, with filming building toward the 2027 premiere window previously outlined by HBO. Hans Zimmer is set to compose the score, marking a significant tonal shift from the original film series.
