Explore the upcoming LOTR Online expansion delving into Sauron's dark werewolf legacy in Middle-earth's First Age.
Standing Stone Games is preparing to take players into one of the darker corners of Middle-earth mythology. The long-running massive multiplayer online game, The Lord of the Rings Online, will release a new expansion in autumn 2026 titled The Wolves of Mordor. Rather than retreading familiar narrative ground, the release draws directly from J.R.R. Tolkien’s First Age lore, focusing on Sauron’s stint as the Lord of Werewolves.
While screen adaptations have frequently concentrated on Sauron’s later manifestations, such as the armoured warlord and floating flaming eye in Peter Jackson’s cinematic trilogy, or his disguise as Annatar in The Rings of Power, his earlier history remains largely untouched in mainstream media. Long before he forged the One Ring in the fires of Mount Doom, Sauron operated as the chief lieutenant to Morgoth, the original Dark Lord of Middle-earth.
During that First Age era, Sauron seized the Elven fortress of Tol Sirion and transformed it into Tol-in-Gaurhoth, the Isle of Werewolves. He commanded monstrous, spirit-inhabited wolves sired by Draugluin. It was on this dark island that Finrod Felagund met his end protecting Beren, and where Sauron himself assumed the shape of a colossal wolf before being defeated by the great hound Huan. For readers who enjoy exploring newly surfaced recordings from Tolkien’s archive, seeing these ancient legendarium details brought into an active game setting offers a rare narrative treat.
The upcoming expansion addresses a specific narrative question: what became of the dark forces bred by Sauron after the destruction of the One Ring? In The Wolves of Mordor, players travel through a post-war landscape where Sauron’s surviving werewolf host must grapple with a world without their master or a unifying purpose.
The story opens up three previously unseen northeastern areas scarred by Sauron’s influence: Heledhris, Parth Rhavas, and Nan Ogol. Rather than presenting Mordor purely as barren waste and abandoned Orc strongholds, the narrative introduces three intelligent factions navigating the aftermath of the Ring’s destruction.
Alongside its narrative expansion, Standing Stone Games is introducing several new gameplay features to support the release. The expansion will include a three-player instance, two six-player instances, and a major raid scheduled to launch before the end of the year. Players can also expect account-wide mechanics such as the Survival Instinct system, providing region-specific abilities and enhancement tactics, and a Neighbor system centred around gifting, home visits, journals, and deeper non-player character relationships.
As The Lord of the Rings Online approaches its twentieth anniversary in April 2027, the expansion highlights the sheer depth of Tolkien’s universe. Few fantasy properties possess a backstory rich enough to supply two decades of ongoing worldbuilding, a point often celebrated when authors reflect on Tolkien’s enduring legacy across modern fantasy literature.
Tolkien’s meticulous approach to myth-making meant that even minor historical footnotes contained full backstories. Although Tolkien was notoriously particular about how his legendary realm was interpreted, as seen in historical correspondence where Tolkien expressed his views on contemporary sci-fi and fantasy, the inclusion of First Age lore gives fans a chance to engage with narrative elements that rarely receive screen time.
While an exact launch date for The Lord of the Rings Online: The Wolves of Mordor has yet to be announced by Standing Stone Games, the expansion remains slated for an autumn 2026 release, bringing one of Middle-earth’s most obscure and menacing eras back into the spotlight.
