Madeline is heading back to the big screen. Sycamore Studios is developing a new live-action film based on Ludwig Bemelmans’ beloved children’s books, reviving one of the most iconic heroines in classic picture book history.

The project marks the latest attempt to reintroduce the fearless Parisian schoolgirl to a new generation — and signals Hollywood’s renewed appetite for timeless literary properties with built-in nostalgia.

A Classic That Never Really Left

Madeline first appeared in 1939 with the publication of Madeline, written and illustrated by Ludwig Bemelmans. The book became an instant bestseller and earned a Caldecott Honor in 1940. Bemelmans went on to write five sequels, including Madeline’s Rescue, which won the Caldecott Medal, cementing the series as a cornerstone of 20th-century children’s literature.

By the time the first live-action adaptation arrived in 1998, the Madeline book series had sold more than 15 million copies worldwide. That TriStar film, directed by Daisy von Scherler Mayer, starred Hatty Jones as Madeline, Frances McDormand as Miss Clavel, and Nigel Hawthorne as Lord Covington. Recent months alone have seen a surge of major book-to-screen announcements, from Emily Henry’s Beach Read heading to film to fresh takes on gothic staples like a bold new Wuthering Heights adaptation. Madeline, with her instantly recognisable blue coat, yellow hat, and fearless streak, feels like a natural addition to that lineup.

The character’s simplicity is part of her power. The original stories follow twelve little girls in two straight lines living in a Paris boarding school, guided by Miss Clavel. Madeline is the smallest — and the bravest — often leading adventures that range from hospital stays to daring rescues.

Whether Sycamore chooses to stick closely to Bemelmans’ text or reinvent elements for modern audiences remains to be seen. What’s clear is that nearly nine decades after her debut, Madeline still holds a firm place in the literary imagination.
