Stephen King’s ‘The Institute’ Season 2 Officially Starts Filming

Stephen King’s kids-with-powers nightmare is heading back to TV. MGM+ has officially started production on Season 2 of The Institute, the supernatural thriller based on King’s 2019 novel about abducted children with terrifying abilities.

Cast returns as MGM+ doubles down on King

The new season was confirmed as cameras began rolling, with Ben Barnes, Joe Freeman, Simone Miller, Fionn Laird, Hannah Galway, and Arlen So all set to return. The series hails from writer Benjamin Cavell (The Stand, Justified) and director Jack Bender (Mr. Mercedes, Child’s Play 3), two longtime King collaborators who have helped define his modern screen presence.

MGM+ hasn’t revealed a firm premiere date yet, but the streamer is aiming for a late-2026 return. That confidence isn’t coming out of nowhere: Season 1 delivered MGM+’s best-ever premiere when it debuted last July, turning King’s telepathic teens and sinister government labs into one of the service’s breakout genre hits.

King himself teased where the story is heading, promising that “set free but hunted, new dangers await the escapees from the Institute.” Season 1 followed teen prodigy Luke Ellis, kidnapped in the dead of night and dumped inside a secret facility where every child arrived the same way—and every one of them could do things no normal kid should. In a nearby town, ex-cop Tim Jamieson tried to rebuild his life, only to collide with Luke’s escape attempt as the Institute’s real purpose came into focus.

Another big year for Stephen King adaptations

The Institute isn’t returning in a vacuum. It’s part of a full-on King wave that’s kept readers and viewers busy across 2025 and 2026. Film adaptations of The Long Walk, The Monkey, and The Running Man have all hit screens or are queued up, alongside universe-expanding projects like HBO’s It: Welcome to Derry prequel series.^[1] Dystopian marches, small-town evil, and cosmic clowns—King’s catalog has proved wildly adaptable across genres and formats.

On the TV side, MGM+ is clearly betting that The Institute can stand alongside recent success stories like the streaming-fueled surge of The Long Walk and renewed interest in King’s older series work.
