Harry Potter fans are apparating to New York for a very specific kind of reunion: Tom Felton, the actor who grew up sneering as Draco Malfoy on screen, is now playing an older, more complicated Draco live on Broadway in Harry Potter and the Cursed Child—and audiences are treating it like a pilgrimage.
Felton is the first original film cast member to reprise his role in the stage story, stepping into the streamlined 3.5-hour Broadway version of the play for a limited run that has now been extended through May 10, 2026, thanks to intense fan demand. NPR notes that after every performance, crowds pack the stage door for selfies, signatures and a closer look at the Slytherin they grew up loving to hate.
From child villain to wizarding-world dad
Now 38, Felton has been tied to Draco Malfoy for most of his life. He spent a decade bleaching his hair and hurling insults at Harry across eight films, while quietly soaking up lessons from co-stars like Maggie Smith, Alan Rickman, Gary Oldman and Helena Bonham Carter. That training makes his return to the wizarding world feel less like stunt casting and more like a natural evolution of a character—and an actor—fans already know.
In Cursed Child, Draco isn’t a swaggering school bully but a wary, grieving father whose son Scorpius befriends Harry’s son Albus. Felton told The Guardian he “understands the character somewhat,” even as he leans into this older, softer version of Draco.
He’s still allowed flashes of the old menace. During rehearsals, Felton slipped in his iconic film line “Scared, Potter?” during a wand duel with Harry—an ad-lib that producers liked enough to keep, according to NPR’s report. When Harry and Draco go airborne and sparks crackle from their wands, Felton says he can feel half the audience snap back to their childhoods.
Broadway, audiobooks and a constantly expanding Wizarding World
Felton’s stint comes at a moment when the Wizarding World seems determined to stay culturally present across every medium. A new full-cast audiobook project is rolling out fresh recordings of the original novels through 2026, with actors like Kit Harington joining as Gilderoy Lockhart in upcoming volumes, according to People. On screen, HBO is still promising a book-faithful TV reboot of the original saga, which executives have described as a “page-perfect” adaptation designed to make viewers feel like they’re watching the novels unfold line by line. With Harry Potter and the Cursed Child already one of Broadway’s highest-grossing shows and Felton locked in through May 2026, the production looks set to remain a major destination for readers who still know exactly which house they’d be sorted into.
