It is not every day that a major subsea energy infrastructure project has to adjust its trajectory around a fictional house-elf, but modern pop-culture fandom has a way of leaving very real marks on physical geography. Planners behind the £430 million Greenlink interconnector project, an electricity link constructed between Pembrokeshire in Wales and County Wexford in Ireland, were forced to alter their cable route after fans raised concerns over a beloved coastal spot.
The location in question is Freshwater West, a sweeping beach in southwest Wales that served as the filming location for Dobby the house-elf’s death and burial in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part One. Over the years, visitors have constructed an unofficial shrine on the sand dunes, leaving behind painted pebbles, hand-carved tributes, and socks left in homage to the character’s freedom.
When initial engineering plans indicated that the subsea cable would land at Freshwater West and pass through the area housing the tribute site, fan feedback prompted a formal rethink.
Rerouting Around a Pop-Culture Shrine
Simon Ludlam, former project director for Greenlink and chief executive of advisory firm Etchea Energy, revealed the details of the reroute during an appearance on The Energy Revolution podcast. He explained that once local opposition and fan concerns became clear, project engineers went back to the drawing board alongside local planning authorities to ensure the cable route bypassed the memorial completely.
“So we got back with the planners and discussed exactly how to reroute the cable so we wouldn’t go anymore into Dobby’s grave,” Ludlam recalled on the podcast. “And a lot of people were very happy about that and, you know, the project’s now going and Dobby’s happy.”
The adjustments allowed work on the interconnector to move forward without disturbing the popular pilgrimage site. Ludlam added:
The subsea link officially went live in 2025, successfully transmitting renewable power between the British and Irish national grids without disturbing the sands where moviegoers once watched Harry dig a grave without magic.
Bronze Age History and Environmental Care
While the house-elf memorial captured international attention, the engineering adjustments at Freshwater West were not solely about fiction. The surrounding dunes and coastal paths in Pembrokeshire are ecologically fragile, and archaeological surveys along the route uncovered significant historical finds.
Engineers had to navigate around genuine Bronze Age remains during site preparation, including a rare collared urn dated to approximately 1700–1500 BC. Managing both ancient human heritage and a modern fan-made shrine required quiet precision from the development team.
The beach memorial itself has long been a subject of local debate. Environmental groups and the National Trust have previously raised concerns over the sheer volume of painted stones and non-biodegradable items left on the dunes, which can harm local wildlife and alter the natural landscape. A formal review by the National Trust in 2022 ultimately allowed the site to remain on the condition that visitors stop leaving synthetic items and single-use plastic gifts.
